Transparent lyric video overlays that survive the export.
Transparency is not just a background setting. The composition, frame images, codec, pixel format and container all have to carry alpha. If one stage drops it, the result becomes opaque even when the preview looked transparent.
Use ProRes 4444 in a MOV container for high-quality editing masters or VP9 in WebM for a smaller web-friendly file. H.264 MP4 does not preserve alpha. Render intermediate frames as PNG rather than JPEG so transparency exists before encoding.

Removing a visible background layer is different from painting black behind it. The root composition must leave transparent pixels untouched, while text, effects and any intentional media layers continue to render normally.
A checkerboard preview is only a visual indicator. Confirm the exported file in software that can display alpha over a second background.
Choose the delivery format before rendering.
ProRes 4444 is the safer interchange format for Premiere Pro, Final Cut Pro, After Effects and Resolve. It preserves high-quality alpha but produces large files. VP9 WebM can carry alpha with much smaller output, although support across editing applications is less consistent.
An MP4 request should be flattened onto an intentional background color. Silent loss of alpha often appears as an unexpected black frame.
- MOV + ProRes 4444 for editing.

- MP4 + H.264 only when an opaque background is acceptable.
Preserve alpha in the intermediate frames.
PNG supports transparency; JPEG does not. A renderer that generates JPEG frames has already discarded alpha before the video encoder starts. Use an alpha-capable pixel format throughout the encode as well.
Test the overlay where it will be edited.
Place the exported lyric layer over both a light and dark clip. Check glows, shadows, semi-transparent fills and edge treatments, not only the empty background. Effects that look clean over black can reveal halos over bright footage.
